The DOE Initiates New Regulation

As part of an ongoing plan to manage the country’s energy use, the Department Of Energy has initiated new regulations mandating that after January 23, air conditioning and heat pump manufacturers can produce only components that meet a 13 SEER or higher rating. Older equipment rated less efficient than 13 SEER may continue in use, but it’s important to note that the industry will eventually deplete the supply of less efficient equipment (both full units and replacement parts).

Upgrading to 13 SEER provides a 30 percent increase over the current 10 SEER rating. The new legislation becomes effective on January 23, 2006.
